Can you explain why you need to issue this call for every transfer?

The 'direction' argument should be ignored by all modern DMA engine
drivers (we've decided previously to get rid of it). As far as I can
see, the device address nor any of the other parameters ever change
between transfers.

Also note that dma transfer directions and dma data directions are
different things. You shouldn't mix the two.

Why sync? What's wrong with dma_unmap()? Have you tested this with
DMA API debugging enabled?

No. You shouldn't do this to a device that you're not in charge of. If
that's important for the DMA engine device, then the DMA engine device
driver should have already done that.

Otherwise, you'll be potentially modifying the DMA mask for a device
_you_ don't own, and which is potentially already in use.

Hi Russell!

Thanks for your notes!

Good - this way, I can move dmaengine_slave_config() to the dma_setup()
function, i.e., to probe().

However, I needed to set it there to some initial value (e.g., DMA_DEV_TO_MEM) -
otherwise the amba-pl08x driver didn't accept it. Is this a bug in the pl08x
driver?

Can we remove the .direction element from the struct dma_slave_config to prevent
others from making the same mistakes? Or is it useful for sth. else still?

Thanks for pointing this out - I wasn't aware that the distinction between the
two is so important. Also consider e.g.:

arch/arm/mm/dma-mapping.c:
/**
 * dma_map_sg - map a set of SG buffers for streaming mode DMA
 * @dev: valid struct device pointer, or NULL for ISA and EISA-like devices
 * @sg: list of buffers
 * @nents: number of buffers to map
 * @dir: DMA transfer direction
         ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
 *
[...]
 * Device ownership issues as mentioned for dma_map_single are the same
 * here.
 */
int dma_map_sg(struct device *dev, struct scatterlist *sg, int nents,
                enum dma_data_direction dir)
                ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
;-)

Can I safely use DMA_BIDIRECTIONAL here (practically, it works - just
tested), because the caller asks for read _or_ write? Or do I need to
formally convert enum dma_transfer_direction to enum dma_data_direction?

Thanks in advance,

Roland

At some point, pl08x should lose all checking on that... It should select
the parameters from the DMA slave config at prepare time instead.

That's the intention, but as yet there's been little effort in terms of
patches. It requires co-operation from all the folk with DMA engine
drivers to sort their stuff out as well...

This pre-dates DMA engine renaming their 'dma_data_direction' to
'dma_transfer_direction', and it's really unfortunate that it now causes
confusion.

The key thing is the enum type, not the comments.

+ * Using the PL080 DMA Controller for transferring the 512 byte subpages
+ * instead of doing readl() / writel() in a loop slows it down significantly.
+ * Measurements via getnstimeofday() upon 512 byte subpage reads reveal:
+ *
+ * - readl() of 128 x 32 bits in a loop: ~20us
+ * - DMA read of 512 bytes (32 bit, 4...128 words bursts): ~60us
+ * - DMA read of 512 bytes (32 bit, no bursts): ~100us
+ *
+ * This applies to the transfer itself. In the DMA case: only the
+ * wait_for_completion() (DMA setup _not_ included).
+ *
+ * Note that the 512 bytes subpage transfer is done directly from/to a
+ * FIFO/buffer inside the NAND controller. Most of the time (~400-800us for a
+ * 2048 bytes page) is spent waiting for the NAND IRQ, anyway. (The NAND
+ * controller transferring data between its internal buffer to/from the NAND
+ * chip.)
+ *
+ * Therefore, using the PL080 DMA is disabled by default, for now.
