I don't know what the better approach is and don't mind changing it. But can you please give me a pointer, how to remove the final block in this case? Shall I copy the relevant code from ext4_truncate()? At the moment I (mis- ?)use ext4_truncate(). Attached is the latest WIP patch. It seems to work for me, but after some tests fsck warns about some nodes not being referenced and having an invalid depth of 2, although the htree as shown by debugfs' htree command looks consistent to me.
