Hi,
while looking into cunroll issues I noticed that we miss quite lot of important unrolling
at -O2 for EON because we think it will increase code size. This is because we do not
account the fact that making array index constant is good thing.

This tracks back to the fact that estimate_num_insns do not consider refs to be expensive
thing at all. This patch adds simple costmodel for those accounting the address arithmetics
+ updates inliner to take into account when inlining eliminate them.

Bootstrapped/regtested x86_64-linux, tested on few benchmarks (tramp3d, eon,
mozilla) that it generally decrease code size without measurable slowdowns

OK?

	* tree-inline.c (estimate_ref_cost): New function.
	(estimate_operand_cost): New function.
	(estimate_num_insns): Estimate operand costs for calls, returns,
	moves and asm statements.
	* tree-inline.h (estimate_ref_cost): Declare.
	* ipa-inline-analysis.c (account_address_costs): New function.
	(estimate_function_body_sizes): Use it.

ICK ...

Why not sth as simple as

     return num_ssa_operands (stmt, SSA_OP_USE);

? a[1][2] and b[2] really have the same cost, variable length
objects have extra SSA operands in ARRAY_REF/COMPONENT_REF for
the size. Thus, stmt cost somehow should reflect the number
of dependent stmts.

So in estimate_num_insns I'd try

int
estimate_num_insns (gimple stmt, eni_weights *weights)
{
  unsigned cost, i;
  enum gimple_code code = gimple_code (stmt);
  tree lhs;
  tree rhs;

  switch (code)
  {
   case GIMPLE_ASSIGN:
    /* Initialize with the number of SSA uses, one is free. */
    cost = num_ssa_operands (stmt, SSA_OP_USE);
    if (cost > 1)
      --cost;

  ...

Richard.

Hmm, also in ASM/call/return? It will definitely make quite a fuzz into the cost metric
by making a=b+c to have cost of 3 instead of 1 as it have now. I am not 100% sure if
a+b should be more expensive than a+1.
I can give that a try and we will see after re-tunning how well it works. Diagonal walk
of multi-dimensional array, i.e. a[b][b][b] will be mis-accounted, too, right?

Other problem I see is how to account this in the inliner. At the moment I have

call (a,b,c)
to be cost of the edge and if we inline the cost disappear completely, but
call (a[b],c)
have the address calculation not accounted to the edge (since inlining does not
eliminate it), just the call itself accounted. With the change we will not
know if the parameters are simple SSA names or something non-trivial.

We have lots of special casing in the call / return / asm case already,
so to ...

> It will definitely make quite a fuzz into the cost metric

... not do this too much I'd even restrict it to memory loads / stores
(for your address cost). Maybe also for calls (they can have memory
loads as arguments and store location), or asms.

Yeah, that's why I made it num_ssa_operands - 1 ;)  Also because
of SSA name = SSA name considered to having cost 0.

> I can give that a try and we will see after re-tunning how well it works. Diagonal walk

Well, it has 3 SSA operands but also three multiplications.

I'd say try it for loads / stores in GIMPLE_ASSIGNs only for now.
Or slightly advanced, count the number of SSA names in each memory
operand (you can't use num_ssa_operands then but have to resort to
tree walks like your patch does, just less "special"-casing)

Well, to precisely handle the cost you'd need to split call cost
into call setup cost and call cost. The current code doesn't handle
it precise either, it just accounts move cost per argument.

But yes, it would bias things quite a bit in some cases. But so
would your patch.

Btw, this reminds me of work I was doing one and a half years ago ...
rewrite the unroll heuristic to consider the whole nest instead
of iteratively unrolling (and thus fighting with the fact the
just unrolled bodies are not quite optimized). The heuristics
try to discover CSE opportunities - designed to help figure out
complete unrolling of a 5-level deep loop (calculix ...) is
profitable. It went nowhere (still needs large max-unroll-insns
increase).

Patches included for reference (not sure what the 2nd ontop of
the 1st adds ;))

Of course it very likely doesn't apply anymore.

Richard.
