The flow mangle action is originally modeled after the tc pedit action,
this has a number of shortcomings:

1) The tc pedit offset must be set on the 32-bits boundaries. Many
protocol header field offsets are not aligned to 32-bits, eg. port
destination, port source and ethernet destination. This patch adjusts
the offset accordingly and trim off length in these case, so drivers get
an exact offset and length to the header fields.

2) The maximum mangle length is one word of 32-bits, hence you need to
up to four actions to mangle an IPv6 address. This patch coalesces
consecutive tc pedit actions into one single action so drivers can
configure the IPv6 mangling in one go. Ethernet address fields now
require one single action instead of two too.

This patch finds the header field from the 32-bit offset and mask. If
there is no matching header field, fall back to passing the original
list of mangle actions to the driver.

The following drivers have been updated accordingly to use this new
mangle action layout:

1) The cxgb4 driver does not need to split protocol field matching
larger than one 32-bit words into multiple definitions. Instead one
single definition per protocol field is enough. Checking for
transport protocol ports is also simplified.

2) The mlx5 driver logic to disallow IPv4 ttl and IPv6 hoplimit fields
   becomes more simple too.

3) The nfp driver uses the nfp_fl_set_helper() function to configure the
payload mangling. The memchr_inv() function is used to check for
proper initialization of the value and mask. The driver has been
updated to refer to the exact protocol header offsets too.

As a result, this patch reduces code complexity on the driver side at
the cost of adding code to the core to perform offset and length
adjustment; and to coalesce consecutive actions.

Let's see if I can recount the facts:
 (1) this is a "improvement" to simplify driver work but driver
     developers (Ed and I) don't like it;
 (2) it's supposed to simplify things yet it makes the code longer;
 (3) it causes loss of functionality (looks like a single u32 changing
both sport and dport is rejected by the IR since it wouldn't
     match fields);
 (4) at v5 it still is buggy (see below).

The motivation for this patch remains unclear.

You are posting new versions at a slow pace which makes it hard to
keep re-reviewing it (v1 on Aug 30th).

With that I'd like to one more time ask you to please stop reposting
this patch and post patches 1 and 2 as separate improvements.

Here we goto out without setting err, so return success even though the
actions didn't really get translated?

Any error from flow_action_mangle() seems to get effectively ignored?

Ed requested to support for partial mangling of header fields. This
patchset already supports for this, eg. mangle one single byte of a
TCP port.

>  (2) it's supposed to simplify things yet it makes the code longer;

The driver codebase is simplified at the cost of adding more frontend
code which is common to everyone.

Not correct.

tc filter add dev eth0 protocol ip \
        parent ffff: \
        pref 11 \
        flower ip_proto tcp \
        dst_port 80 \
        src_ip 1.1.2.3/24 \
action pedit ex munge tcp src 2004 \
action pedit ex munge tcp dst 80

This results in two independent tc pedit actions:

* One tc pedit action with one single key, with value 0xd4070000 /
  0x0000ffff.
* Another tc pedit action with one single key, with value 0x00005000
  / 0xffff0000.

This works perfectly with this patchset.

> (4) at v5 it still is buggy (see below).

That, I can fix, thank you for reporting.

> The motivation for this patch remains unclear.

The motivation is to provide a representation for drivers that is
easier to interpret. Have a look at the nfp driver and tell me if it
not easier to follow. This is already saving complexity from the
drivers.

Thank you.

You refer to single u32 word changing both sport and dport.

What's the point with including this in the subset of the uAPI to be
supported?

In software, it really makes sense to use this representation since it
is speeding up packet processing.

In hardware, supporting this uAPI really gets you nothing at all.

We have to document what subset of the uAPI is support through
hardware offloads. Pretending that we can support all uAPI is not
true, we only support for tc pedit extended mode right now.

As Jakub said, 'We suffered through enough haphazard "updates"'.  Please
can you fix the problems your previous API changes caused (I still haven't
had an answer about the flow block changes since sending you my driver code
two weeks ago) before trying to ram new ones through.

Well selected. Also part of the savings here are patch 2 which no one
objects to :/

As you discovered yourself in the follow up, it is correct.

You keep breaking flow offloads are we are tired of it.

Obviously IMO it's just churn, otherwise why would I object?

You keep repeating that it's making drivers better yet the only driver
authors who respond to you are against this change.

How are you not seeing the irony of that?

Ed requested this was a opt-in/helper the driver can call if they
choose to. Please do that. Please provide selftests.

Thank you.

I will follow up to support for mangling two ports with one single u32
word, no problem.

Making this opt-in will just leave things as bad as they are right
now, with drivers that are very much hard to read.

What's the point with removing this from the uAPI which implicitly the
kernel internal layers supported (whether individual drivers did or
 not)?

> In hardware, supporting this uAPI really gets you nothing at all.
That depends how the hardware works.  Current hardware tends to do pedit
offload based on protocol(-ossified) fields, but there's no guarantee
that every future piece of hardware will be the same.  Someone might
build HW whose packet-editing part is based on the pedit uAPI approach,
explicitly designing their HW to support Linux semantics.  And you'd be
telling them "sorry, we decided to remove part of that uAPI because,
uhh, well we didn't actually have a reason but we did it anyway".

> We have to document what subset of the uAPI is support through
> hardware offloads. Pretending that we can support all uAPI is not
> true, we only support for tc pedit extended mode right now.
Who's "we"?  AIUI the kernel will pass any pedits to drivers, they don't
have to be extended mode, and they certainly don't have to have come
from the iproute2 'tc' binary, so they might not bear any relation to
the protocol fields tc knows about.
Pedit is supposed to work even in the absence of protocol knowledge in
the kernel (e.g. in combination with cls_u32, you can filter and mangle
traffic in a completely new protocol), you're turning it into Yet
Another Ossified TCP/IP Monoculture.  This is not the direction the
networking offloads community is trying to move in.

+100 to everything Jakub said, and please remember that some of us have
to maintain driver support for slightly more than just the latest
kernel, and your pointless churn makes that much harder.  ("A slow sort
of country; here, it takes all the running _you_ can do, just to stay
in the same place.")  I'm not talking about drivers stretching back to
2.6 era here; we _expect_ that to be painful.  But when code to build
on as recent as 4.20 is a thicket of clustered ifdefs, without a single
piece of user-visible functionality being added as a result (and some
removed; not only are you chopping bits of the pedit API off, but TC
action stats are *still* broken since 5.1), something is _very_ wrong.

Of course we know the real reason you're making all these API changes is
for netfilter offload (I have my doubts whether anyone is actually
using netfilter in the wild; crusties still use iptables and early-
adopters have all jumped ship to eBPF solutions, but if you're so
desperate for netfilter to remain relevant I suppose we have to humour
you at least a little), but there's absolutely no technical reason I
can see why netfilter couldn't translate its mangles into existing
pedit language.  If patch 3 is truly and unavoidably a prerequisite of
patch 4, you'll need to explain why if you want a sympathetic hearing.

Again, there are two driver developers in this conversation, and they

Agreed, the proposed changes are taking the code and interfaces in
completely the wrong direction.

I agree with Jakub and Edward on all of these points.
