This driver includes a debugfs interface for developers to get more hardware
information in real-time.

This patch also includes a sysfs interface for root users to use to help
configure/view some of the internal parameters of the device.

I don't think you need this. If you put a NULL pointer in for the __ATTR()
then it will do the right thing for you.

These are bogus, just return an error code or make don't define
the file in the first place. Returning error in contents
is not useful for programmatic usage.

The store routines should all be checking for permissions.

	if (!ns_capable(net->user_ns, CAP_NET_ADMIN))
		return -EPERM;

The sysfs API is doing writes to device state without locking.
You probably want to do:
	if (!rtnl_trylock())
		return restart_syscall();

...
	rtnl_unlock();

Also, anything in sysfs is device specific and you really need to make
a strong case for why your device is special and needs an exception.
Other devices will have hardware switches and doing something through
sysfs is going to create a pain for any controller application.

I vote against including the sysfs VEB stuff because it will become
a lifetime ABI.

[ ... many good comments on i40e_sysfs.c ... ]

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for your comments. Frankly, we were hoping for this kind of feedback when we posted the first version of this driver a couple of months ago, with the intent of clearing up any issues in time to get settled and accepted about now. Yes, this is driven by business reasons that this list doesn't need to hear me whine about, but that is our reality.

We'll be happy to work with you on- or off-list over the next few days to come up with a good resolution to your concerns, and from that we can publish follow-on patches to this current submission. We should be able to get it settled and done quickly and without too much fuss. I won't be at Plumber's this year, but perhaps Jesse or John can get together with you and other concerned sysfs folks if needed to finalize any issues.

Will this work for you?

Thanks,
sln

Okay, the quickest path to that might be to drop the sysfs patch for
now. If that is acceptable I will re-spin the patches tonight.

You're just going to ask me to add the sysfs code later, just make
the appropriate fixes.

Thanks.

I am very busy with work and personal issues. Don't depend on my time.
More surprising is that others did not see the same things.
Your business is your problem.

If I were to guess the 3 primary reasons for that:
  1) the series is too large for anyone to actually read it all without
     being paid to do so
  2) the sysfs code is at the end of a huge debugfs patch, which
     probably noone cares about whether they are paid or not
  3) the small sysfs patch is so full of minor issues to nit about that
     it seems pointless to even start

But since I looked at it, I can name a few other obvious issues with the
sysfs patch:
 - mix of macro and octal mode values
 - no documentation (required for all new sysfs attributes according to
    Documentation/filesystems/sysfs.txt)
 - extremely dubious kboject usage and attribute creation/deletion (How
    does this fit into the driver model? How will userspace race with
    these attributes being added and removed?)

I am sure there are plenty more.

If we simply remove the VEB attributes (cvlan, mode, seid, svlan) but keep the model structure and the VSI attributes, will that satisfy your vote, or are you suggesting that we should drop the whole sysfs model that we implemented?

At this point after some discussion internally, we think it would be better to simply remove the whole sysfs module - it is an optional section with no direct operational requirement. The intent was to get something started that looked useful, but perhaps we were a little premature in presenting this model for these new switch offload capabilities.

As Dave rightly pointed out, we may want to bring this back in the future, but I think that we have more work to do with the community in proposing and designing a switching model, if it really is even needed. That's not an over-night thing, and we shouldn't be trying to patch up something that has fundamental concerns. Also, bringing it back later when it isn't obscured by the rest of the driver might be more successful in getting community input.

IMHO attributes are a nice way of handling the VSI attributes since they
seem hardware specific. Not sure how to do the right thing with switching.
Should it look like Macvlan, bridge, VXLAN, or something else.

I think if you add a new rtnl link type call it "VSI" then it looks very
similar to a macvlan which has been offloaded. Additionally you get all
the fdb and ndo ops that already exist for free.

I proposed something similar here,

http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.network/237617

although as Ben pointed out I screwed up the implementation. I'll work
on updating this to submit when net-next opens again.

After some discussion with Stephen and a few others internally, it doesn't look like there's any easy resolution to the i40e sysfs problems so for now we're going to leave that module out of our submission. Yes, we may want to bring it back in the future, but not until we've had a chance to work through the fundamental problems and come up with an interface that will be more generic, usable, and acceptable by other similar drivers.

Thanks,
sln
