The compatible string is filled in by expansion module DT overlay, so no
default compatible string in the panel node here. The panel interface is
the same for all panels that can be atteched to this board, so the panel
node is common for all DTOs and can be in the base DT.

No, the 0 is correct and you're not the first one to wonder about this
oddity.

See drivers/gpio/gpiolib-of.c :

I understand that the polarity is ignored by Linux Kernel. But it
shouldn't prevent us from describing the polarity cell with defines
for better readability.

I'm always looking for the pattern below when reviewing the device tree.

	regulator-xxx {
		compatible = "regulator-fixed";
		...
		gpio = <&gpio3 6 GPIO_ACTIVE_HIGH>;
		enable-active-high;
	}

Or for low polarity:

	regulator-xxx {
		compatible = "regulator-fixed";
		...
		gpio = <&gpio3 6 GPIO_ACTIVE_LOW>;
	}

The polarity define is helpful for me to validate whether
`enable-active-high` property should present.

Maybe the best thing we can do to resolve this is to ask GPIO maintainer
Linus what is the preferred way of describing this in DT -- whether with
valid GPIO flags which are ignored or with 0 instead of GPIO flags ?

Could you share your get_maintainers.pl invocation? I'd like to
adjust the reviewer entry in MAINTAINERS, so such patches get
into our kernel@pengutronix.de inbox as well.

Some more comments below.

Here you assume GPIO1_IO04 is muxed as GPIO.

Here you mux it for USDHC2_VSELECT though. Is this intended?

You can add

  no-sd;
  no-sdio;

to skip that init dance if the eMMC is indeed non-removable.

Plain get_maintainer -f path/to/dts

That's a good question, other DTs do the same thing, I suspect the
sd-vsel-gpios could be dropped, but as long as it is not outright
harmful, it can be used for backward compatibility to support less
complete OSes which may not handle the eSDHC VSELECT bit , so I figured
it is good to keep both options.

The sd-vsel-gpios is only needed when the hardware has an arbitrary GPIO
connected to the SD_VSEL signal of the PCA9450. IMHO, if SD_VSEL is
connected to the VSELECT signal it would be better to drop sd-vsel-gpios.

Would be interesting what OSes you have in mind? The eSDHC
driver/hardware should always handle the VSELECT signal, no?

Current practice does not match this statement however, notice how they
are all gpio 1 4 :

$ git grep sd-vsel-gpios
Documentation/devicetree/bindings/regulator/nxp,pca9450-regulator.yaml:
sd-vsel-gpios:
arch/arm64/boot/dts/freescale/imx8mm-verdin.dtsi:

sd-vsel-gpios = <&gpio1 4 GPIO_ACTIVE_HIGH>;

Not necessarily, but the ones I am aware of (U-Boot, Linux) do handle
VSELECT.

Ah. This doesn't contain /imx/ and thus didn't match the i.MX
MAINTAINERS entry at all. I just sent a patch to remedy this.

I'd assume any useful software will have support for the pinctrl
binding and once you mux the pad for USDHC2_VSELECT, it's not
useful to have a device trying to use the GPIO.

Yes, but these are probably all copy-pasted from somewhere. Maybe from
my original Kontron DT (before [1]) where I was actually using
sd-vsel-gpios.
But these DTs all mux the VSELECT signal to the GPIO1_IO04 pad, so
sd-vsel-gpios is useless.

Ok, but even if VSELECT is not handled. Setting sd-vsel-gpios doesn't
fix this as long as the GPIO1_IO04 pad is muxed to VSELECT.

Maybe we should just scrub them all then ?

Yes, sounds good!
