These busy-wait polling loops are a bit of a worry.  What is the
expected and max-possible duration?

Putting a cpu_relax() in there might calm things down a bit.

These are I2C and SPI devices so there will already be some blocking as
part of the I/O - it should be much more than you'd see from just
cpu_relax().  Some sort off upper bound on the number of iterations
would be nice though.
