Add ps3vram driver, which exposes unused video RAM on the PS3 as a MTD
device suitable for storage or swap. Fast data transfer is achieved
using a local cache in system RAM and DMA transfers via the GPU.

This version has been updated to work with PS3 firmware 2.50, and
to use ps3_gpu_mutex.

Please consider for 2.6.29.

I tested this on PS3 and it both fixes the memory corruption
problem and works with firmware 2.50, so I think it is ready
for 2.6.29.

David, please check the ps3vram mtd part and and give comments.

Since this patch is dependent on Geert's ps3_gpu_mutex patch
'powerpc/ps3: Replace the flip_ctl logic in ps3av and ps3fb by a mutex'
I recently posted to linuxppc-dev, I think just an Acked-by for the
mtd part is enough, and I can then repost this patch to linuxppc-dev
and ask Paul to merge it with the ps3_gpu_mutex patch.

The code looks alright mostly, but what made you do it as an MTD driver?
This would be much easier to do as a block device driver, similar to
axonram. This also has the advantage that you can use it with direct mapping,
e.g. wiht axfs or ext2 xip to run binaries directly from video memory,
or as a backing store for azfs so that the SPUs can use it as a fast
DMA target.

Please don't define your own wrappers like this. Either use
a plain pr_debug, or the better dev_dbg().

Most people don't use the stdint.h types in the kernel, for historic
reasons. When you have a memory address, that is normally represented
as a dma_addr_t or an unsigned long.

This kind of busy-looping is considered very bad. Can't you change
the code so that this is called in non-atomic context and you can do
msleep()?

If you only needed this code for debugging, maybe you should
now remove it.

Again, try avoiding udelay.

ioremap returns a noncacheable guarded mapping. Are you should you
want that for the memory? Normally, it should at least not be guarded,
and possibly even cached, if you don't need to keep it consistent
with the view from the GPU.

Looks sane, once you fix a few stray instances of '1MB' to '1MiB'.

(sorry for the delay).

Most people on this list are probably familiar with the recent story
about the PS3 cluster guide:

http://www.ps3cluster.org/

I'm just curious if the Vidio-Ram as Ram stuff has any potential
application for cluster performance?

As a side question; I've previously about drivers for nVidia and ATI
cards which allow the video CPU to be used for crunching numbers.

Would that have any potential application on the PS3?

No. Generally, for performance, you decompose the problem such that
the working set is within system memory.

No, the PS3 does not support that.
