Most distro kernels don't even have the code, it only\nwent into 4.6.\n\n> CONFIG_MPROFILE_KERNEL depends on CC_USING_MPROFILE_KERNEL which is\n\nNo it doesn't:\n\nconfig MPROFILE_KERNEL\n\tdepends on PPC64 && CPU_LITTLE_ENDIAN\n\tdef_bool !DISABLE_MPROFILE_KERNEL\n\n> automatically detected and is LE only.\n\nIt's automatically detected at build time, which is too late, so our\nonly option is to break the build:\n\nifdef CONFIG_MPROFILE_KERNEL\n    ifeq ($(shell $(srctree)/arch/powerpc/scripts/gcc-check-mprofile-kernel.sh $(CC) -I$(srctree)/include -D__KERNEL__),OK)\n        CC_FLAGS_FTRACE := -pg -mprofile-kernel\n        KBUILD_CPPFLAGS += -DCC_USING_MPROFILE_KERNEL\n    else\n        # If the user asked for mprofile-kernel but the toolchain doesn't\n        # support it, emit a warning and deliberately break the build later\n        # with mprofile-kernel-not-supported. We would prefer to make this an\n        # error right here, but then the user would never be able to run\n        # oldconfig to change their configuration.\n        $(warning Compiler does not support mprofile-kernel, set CONFIG_DISABLE_MPROFILE_KERNEL)\n        CC_FLAGS_FTRACE := -mprofile-kernel-not-supported\n    endif\nendif\n\n\nSo in short it's a big PITA.\n\ncheers","headers":{"Return-Path":"<linuxppc-dev-bounces+patchwork-incoming=ozlabs.org@lists.ozlabs.org>","X-Original-To":["patchwork-incoming@ozlabs.org","linuxppc-dev@lists.ozlabs.org"],"Delivered-To":["patchwork-incoming@ozlabs.org","linuxppc-dev@lists.ozlabs.org"],"Received":["from lists.ozlabs.org (lists.ozlabs.org [103.22.144.68])\n\t(using TLSv1.2 with cipher ADH-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits))\n\t(No client certificate requested)\n\tby ozlabs.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 3w7Nc35xnYz9ryk\n\tfor <patchwork-incoming@ozlabs.org>;\n\tWed, 19 Apr 2017 23:47:47 +1000 (AEST)","from lists.ozlabs.org (lists.ozlabs.org [IPv6:2401:3900:2:1::3])\n\tby lists.ozlabs.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3w7Nc359G8zDqRc\n\tfor <patchwork-incoming@ozlabs.org>;\n\tWed, 19 Apr 2017 23:47:47 +1000 (AEST)","from ozlabs.org (ozlabs.org [IPv6:2401:3900:2:1::2])\n\t(using TLSv1.2 with cipher ADH-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits))\n\t(No client certificate requested)\n\tby lists.ozlabs.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 3w7NZx1YRgzDq8M\n\tfor <linuxppc-dev@lists.ozlabs.org>;\n\tWed, 19 Apr 2017 23:46:49 +1000 (AEST)","from authenticated.ozlabs.org (localhost [127.0.0.1])\n\t(using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256 (128/128\n\tbits)) (No client certificate requested)\n\tby ozlabs.org (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id 3w7NZw6Sx0z9ryk;\n\tWed, 19 Apr 2017 23:46:48 +1000 (AEST)"],"From":"Michael Ellerman <mpe@ellerman.id.au>","To":"Balbir Singh <bsingharora@gmail.com>, Anton Blanchard <anton@samba.org>","Subject":"Re: [PATCH] powerpc/configs: Enable function trace by default","In-Reply-To":"<1492606204.7284.1.camel@gmail.com>","References":"<20170413070309.10497-1-bsingharora@gmail.com>\n\t<eea3c818-f5ca-4cd9-c715-307104534970@c-s.fr>\n\t<1492071568.8380.20.camel@gmail.com> <20170419211346.5e228370@kryten>\n\t<1492606204.7284.1.camel@gmail.com>","User-Agent":"Notmuch/0.21 (https://notmuchmail.org)","Date":"Wed, 19 Apr 2017 23:46:47 +1000","Message-ID":"<87lgqw5x2w.fsf@concordia.ellerman.id.au>","MIME-Version":"1.0","Content-Type":"text/plain","X-BeenThere":"linuxppc-dev@lists.ozlabs.org","X-Mailman-Version":"2.1.23","Precedence":"list","List-Id":"Linux on PowerPC Developers Mail List\n\t<linuxppc-dev.lists.ozlabs.org>","List-Unsubscribe":"<https://lists.ozlabs.org/options/linuxppc-dev>,\n\t<mailto:linuxppc-dev-request@lists.ozlabs.org?subject=unsubscribe>","List-Archive":"<http://lists.ozlabs.org/pipermail/linuxppc-dev/>","List-Post":"<mailto:linuxppc-dev@lists.ozlabs.org>","List-Help":"<mailto:linuxppc-dev-request@lists.ozlabs.org?subject=help>","List-Subscribe":"<https://lists.ozlabs.org/listinfo/linuxppc-dev>,\n\t<mailto:linuxppc-dev-request@lists.ozlabs.org?subject=subscribe>","Cc":"linuxppc-dev@lists.ozlabs.org","Errors-To":"linuxppc-dev-bounces+patchwork-incoming=ozlabs.org@lists.ozlabs.org","Sender":"\"Linuxppc-dev\"\n\t<linuxppc-dev-bounces+patchwork-incoming=ozlabs.org@lists.ozlabs.org>"}},{"id":1760861,"web_url":"http://patchwork.ozlabs.org/comment/1760861/","msgid":"<3xjgKz5BGDz9t2Q@ozlabs.org>","date":"2017-08-31T11:35:51","subject":"Re: powerpc/configs: Enable function trace by default","submitter":{"id":69509,"url":"http://patchwork.ozlabs.org/api/people/69509/","name":"Michael Ellerman","email":"patch-notifications@ellerman.id.au"},"content":"On Thu, 2017-04-13 at 07:03:09 UTC, Balbir Singh wrote:\n> We expect to have these configs on by default, most\n> distros turn them off, its always good to have them on\n> so that we can use them and hopefully not break them\n> \n> Signed-off-by: Balbir Singh <bsingharora@gmail.com>\n> Acked-by: Naveen N.
